eath of Lord Orford. On October 18, 1793, Lord Orford writes toMiss Berry : The coach has just brought mefrom Park Place a grove of Lavender Plants1 foryou, of which Mrs. Darner had given me notice. My gardener has gone to distribute them aboutCliveden, which I hope next summer will be asodoriferous as Mount Carmel. On October 19 th, Mrs. Darner wrote to MissBerry, that Lord Orford was very unwell; itappeared afterwards that he was not really ill,but did not want to go to Park Place, which hedescribed as one of the coldest houses in theworld. He again had supper with her on November 30th,and met the Duchess of Richmond, Lord Derby, the Farrens, and Edward Jerningham. The nextmention Lord Orford makes of being at Mrs.Darners house was on April 27, 1794, when hemet her parents, the House of Argyle, theGreatheads, Mrs. Hervey, and the CharmingMan; he stayed till they went to supper andwas not at all fatigued. 1 Park Place was at that time much celebrated for its lavenderand distillery. 136
Text Appearing After Image:
9 UPPER BROOK STREET, LONDON (1906) AT HOME Mr. and Miss Mary Berry were at Park PlaceJuly 31, 1794. Lord Orford did not expectthem to return so soon, concluding they wouldbe pressed to stay longer and would be frail;they had found the alterations to the house hadadvanced rapidly. In September 1794 Mrs. Darner removed fromher house in Sackville Street, where she hadlived for some years, to 9 Upper Brook Street.Lord Orford writes : I went yesterday eveningto Mrs. Darners and had a glimpse of her newhouse, literally a glimpse, for I saw but one roomon the first floor, where she had lighted a fire, that I might not mount two flights, and as itwas eight oclock and quite dark, she only openeda door or two, and gave me a cats-eye view intothem. One blemish I had descried at first, thehouse had a corner arrival like her fathers.1 Ahme! who do not love to be led through thepublic! I did see the new bust of Mrs. Siddons, and a very mistressly performance it is indeed. Of this glimpse Miss Berry
