THE SINNOTT FAMILY and of very independent property; a person of the most quiet and peaceable disposition,commanding the respect and esteem of all who knew him, and who had a young familygrowing up about him. Bound by every tie that should make life dear to him, yet hismanly and generous spirit was roused at the atrocities he saw committed on the unoffendingand defenceless farmers and peasantry, and though sure of protection himself, from hisintimacy with the leading Protestants of the country, he spurned that protection which wasto be purchased by remaining a cold spectator of the destruction of his neighbors. Humanity,the sure attendant of true courage, was manifested by him so strongly throughout theInsurrection, to his Protestant neighbors, that the respect and esteem of his countrymen,of every religious persuasion, was rather increased than diminished by his heroic resistanceto subaltern tyranny.
