28o THE ANNALS OF HYGIENE. special thanks of the Bureau, but Dr.Porters duties have been especially-trying at Jacksonville. The Government was not called on torender special aid to the Duval countyboard of health and Jacksonville untiltheir resources were practically ex-hausted and general appeals weremade to the country for aid. The Bu-reau assumed charge of the munici-pal hospitals at Sand Hills and SaintLukes and retained the officers andemployes previously employed by theboard of health, paid for the sanitarypolice, and purchased disinfectantsand general sanitary supplies. Theexpenses at Jacksonville have beenquite heavy. A fumigation stationwas also opened at Jacksonville andplaced in charge of Dr. Julius Wise ofMemphis. Dr. Porter remains in Jack-sonville at the date of this report incharge of the hospital and all Govern-ment relief measures in that city. Atpresent, in consequence of the follow-ing request of the board of health ofJacksonville, refugees are preventedfrom returni
