nteresting personal description of Daniel Defoe, someof the characteristics set forth being noticeable in his Iowadescendants, was given in a proclamation issued by QueenAnnes ministers shortly after the publication of that pam-phlet : AVhereas—Daniel De Foe, alias De Fooe, is charged withAvriting a scandalous and seditious pamphlet entitled, TheShortest way with Dissentors. He is a middle-sized, spareman, about forty years old, of a brown complexion, and dark-brown colored hair, but wears a wig; a hooked nose, a sharpchin, grey eyes, and a large mole near his mouth; was bornin London, and for many years was a hose-factor, in Free-mans yard in Cornhill; and now is the owner of the brickand pantile works near Tilbury Fort in Essex; whoever shalldiscover the said Daniel De Foe to one of Her Majestys prin-cipal Secretaries of State, or any of Her Majestys justicesof the peace, so he may be apprehended, shall have a reward ^The Defoe Family in America, Scribners MonUily, voL xii, p. 61.

CAPT. ALBERT ELLIS THE DEFOE FAMILY IN IOWA of £50, which ller Majesty has ordered immediately to be paidupon sucli discovery. On liis release he was again imprisoned for writing politicalpamphlets, but through the influence of Lord Oxford he wasliberated and in the safe retreat of his sisters home he con-tinued to send forth his barbed arrows. A small room was fitted up to be used as a study by him,and it w^as in this seclusion, in the year 1719, that .RobinsonCrusoe was written. His sisters only child, Elizabeth, was five years of agewhen her uncle came to live with them, and she received hereducation in his quiet study under his teaching. It was doubt-less her active mind and interest in her studies that arousedhis interest in the higher education of women Avhich he espe-cially advocated. At the age of eighteen the daughter, Elizabeth, engagedherself to marry one to whom her mother was bitterly opposed,and the engagement was very unceremoniously broken off byher. This so angered E
