English: "A prodigiously brilliant young person of 16 is Miss Marcet Haldeman, the pretty Dearborn seminary girl who was called to her home in Girard, Kas., last week by the sudden death of her father, Dr. Harry Haldeman. No fanciful conception of a trained imagination could have more idyllic content than the romance of this family of three—father, mother, and daughter. ¶ Musician, scientist, writer, and financier was the young genius who married his stepsister, Miss Addams, a critical woman of much force[,] between twenty-five and thirty years ago. This was the heritage of Miss Marcet Haldeman, the little girl on whom her gifted parents have spent the fullness of their thought and love. And the child has lived up to her parentage. Although unusually developed and mentally mature, she has a natural girlish charm and a youthful love for riding, basket ball, and outdoor things. She is the most graceful and entertaining of hostesses in her big, comfortable home with rows and rows of rare books and its interesting examples of art. She will be graduated at the seminary this year, entering Bryn Mawr in the fall. Miss Marcet is doubly interesting to Chicagoans, as her mother's sister is Miss Jane Addams, of Hull house." Chicago Inter Ocean newspaper, 2 March 1905, p. 6 "A Bright Kansas Girl." (Note that the newspaper gets her age wrong: at this time she was not 16 but 17.) This clipping was kept in her 1904 diary, which I own. |
