Description

1826-34 N. Lincoln Park West Chicago, IL Architects: Adler & Sullivan

In 1882 Ann Halsted's husband died, therefore she decided to build an investment property which would generate income for her family. Dankmar Adler and Louis Sullivan began with the construction of only 3 townhouses in 1885 as the old Halsted house was still standing. When that was torn down the next year, the architects added two more townhouses. Throughout the 1880's, Sullivan was still experimenting with his geometric organic designs, like in this similar example. His extravagant ornament was a few years away. Ann Halsted collected rents on these properties until 1921, then she started selling each property one by one. Her Adler and Sullivan-designed house is still standing on nearby Belden.
