Title
Anlo-Saxon long brooch
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy Anglo-Saxon/Early-Medieval long brooch, from either a cruciform or small-long brooch. Only the bow, uper hals of the foot and catchplate survive, the remainder of the object now missing due to old breaks. The bow is curved, D-shaped in section with flat back face and domed front face. It has flattened rectangular panels at top and bottom each with single triangular notches to either side and incised double transverse grooves where they join the bow. The bow in between is slightly faceted with a central vertical ridge. At the base of the bow is the rectangular foot, which has a similar rectangular panel at the join with the bow, followed by a faceted front face before terminating in old breaks. On the back face of the foot is an integrally cast catchplate that is rectangular in form with a folded outer edge. The entire object measures 26.88mm in length, 9.23mm in width at bow, 2.77mm in thickness at bow, and 4.13g in weight. This is an incomplete long brooch of Anglo-Saxon date from either a cruciform or small-long brooch, the lack of headplate and foot making a close identification problematic. It is of Early Anglo-Saxon date, c.5th-6th centuries AD.
