Summary
[edit]DescriptionAnkara 19 Mayıs Stadium Construction (12984446335).jpg |
English: Ankara 19 Mayıs Stadium, designed by Paolo Vietti-Violi who is also the architect of İnönü Stadium, opened in 1936. The structure is symbolic for the Early Republican Period in a functional, socio-cultural way, for it was the first project of its kind in Turkey. The initial international competition for the project was for a sports complex and the winning project of Vietti-Violi proposed not only a stadium, but a group of buildings consisting of an athletics stadium, a hippodrome, a velodrome, training areas for team sports, tennis courts, a gym, two swimming pools, changing rooms, club buildings, a polygon and open-air areas for the audience. The project was designed for the Balkan Olympics with a capacity of 25,000. In 2008 discussions began to replace the stadium with a larger one that would be able host 40,000, or with a large park and open-air spaces. Today, the future of the stadium remains uncertain.
