As there would be no sap to gather,the boy was given a holiday after his usual morningduties were done, and he immediately set out for theswamp, hoping before night to locate the nest. Itmight seem an easy task to find such a large nest,but the swamp contained several acres, and in manyplaces the evergreens were so thick as almost to ex.elude the sunlight. The day was spent in a fruitless search, whichperplexed the boy, who had often located the nestof the bobolink and the meadow lark, nests that arenot by any means easily found. However, as thesearch had been systematic and the whole groundhad not yet been covered, he still hoped to find itbefore the eggs had hatched, for he wished to becomefamiliar with the nest and eggs, as well as with theyoung and old birds. An Unusual Nesting-place of the Great Horned Owl(Location indicated by X) 293 The Great Horned Owl 295 the tree. The old nest was still there, and, just tosee in what condition it had been left after the stormsof winter, he climbed the tree. The nest was betweenfifty and sixty feet from the ground. Just imagine theboys surprise, when about thirty feet from the nest,to see a Great Horned Owl silently glide off andwing its way through the tree tops. It was a revela-tion, upon reaching it, to find that a Great HornedOwl had really used an old crows nest, which hadthe appearance of being slightly remodelled and wassparsely lined with evergreen leaves and feathers.In the nest were three white eggs, nearly globular inshape and about the size of a bantams. The boyafterward learned that the usual number of eggsdeposited by the Great Horned Owl is two, and thatthe bird sometimes constructs for itself a nest in ahollow tree or an evergreen.
