ths the birds are not soscarce, only we must know where and how to lookfor them. We have with us our permanent residents,which include most of the hawks and owls, blue jay,bob-white, song sparrow, crow, meadow lark, flicker,American goldfinch, ruffed grouse, purple finch, anda few others. These with our winter residents, thebrown creeper, junco, crossbill, white-throated spar-row, snowflake, northern shrike, and redpoll, stillleave us a considerable variety for study. A thoroughacquaintance with these winter birds alone will takeus many a season. These are but a few of the many facts concerning igz The Migration of Birds bird migration. As you study the subject from yearto year, and carefully compare your notes, you willfind the movement a very constant and regular one,and, as time goes on, your interest in it will increaserather than diminish, and you will find yourselfwondering why it is that each spring you greet thebluebird and the oriole wi h a little deeper feeling. Now it is time tolisten for the note of the bluebird. A plaintive noteit is at first, but it will soon give place to a pleasingsong, never loud, but always sweet and altogethersuggestive of the warblers. How welcome it is,—that bit of blue and brown,flitting among the yet naked boughs of the old appletrees!
