Description
Français : Peinture commandée à Anicet-Charles-Gabriel Lemonnier (1743-1824) par la famille de banquiers et armateurs Le Couteulx, et réalisée entre 1787 et 1792.

Sur ce tableau allégorique intitulé L'Esprit du Commerce, destiné à dépeindre la prospérité économique de la ville de Rouen, on distingue les quatre continents : l'Europe souveraine sur son trône (en reine assise à gauche), l'Asie offrant ses trésors (au centre, parée de draps roses et bleus), l'Amérique à demi-nue (à genoux implorant la protection du Vieux Monde) et l'Afrique (repoussant ses enfants condamnés à l'esclavage). La toile est installée en 1792 dans le palais des Consuls de Rouen.

L'œuvre est désormais conservée au Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen.
