Anglo Saxon sceatta obverse
Description
English: An important and unusual find of an 8th century, silver Anglo Saxon sceat of 'monitascorum' type. Normally this type has 'MONITA SCORVM' on the obverse, but in this case has the 'DE LVNDONIA' inscription of series L instead. Michael Metcalf, Thrymsas and Sceattas' (Oxford, 1993), p. 435 notes one other specimen of this variant, which he describes as a 'unique and highly interesting coin'. If the inscriptions are taken at face value this is an ecclesiastical issue ('Moneta Sanctorum') from London, presumably issued for a bishop of London.

Addendum:

In December 2005 a second coin of this type was found in Essex, See record ESS-6C4717 (EMC 2005.0289) bringing the total known to three. A fourth example is published in Kent, 2005, 'Coinage and Currency in London from the London and Middlesex Records and other sources: from Roman times to the Victorians', London: Baldwin's, p.4 no. 13.
