Title
Anglo Saxon sceat
Description
English: An Early Medieval silver sceat of Series E, Variety A type, c. AD 710-765. The obverse depicts a quilled crescent enclosing four bars. Further decoration to the right of the crescent and bars suggests a more elaborate design, but this is obscured due to circumferential losses. The reverse is of the standard type, with cross pommee decoration on the external edges of the pelleted standard; one edge is further decorated with a pellet triangle; within the standard is a degenerate TOTII design with a further pellet triangle. The reverse decoration is very similar to an example from the Hallum hoard illustrated in Abramson 2006, p91 (Top row: fourth from left). Cf. also Abramson 2006, p117, E110.
