Title |
Anglo Saxon cruciform brooch |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy early Anglo-Saxon small-long brooch. The head plate and a fragment of bow is all that remains of the brooch. The rectangular head plate (15mm x 13.4mm) has a border of two incised horizontal lines, which overlap at the corners. The integrally cast top and side knobs are crescent shaped in outline and flattened in cross-section, giving a trefoil appearance to the headplate. Only the top of the arched bow remains.
On the back of the brooch, a single integral copper-alloy pin bar lug is encrusted in iron corrosion. Some of the iron corrosion is visible on the front of the head plate. The surviving length of the brooch is 31.65mm, the width is 35.31mm and the weight is 8.36g. |
