Title
Anglo Saxon : Cruciform Brooch
Description
English: A cast copper alloy Early Medieval small long brooch. The head of the brooch is cruciform in shape with the ends of each arm being curved. In the centre of the cruciform there is a slightly raised square shape with rounded corners. The bow of the brooch rises in a shallow asymmetrical arch shape and then flattens off to form a rounded foot end to the brooch. At the junction between the arch and the foot end there are three transverse lines forming part of the decoration. The reverse of the head has the remnants of an intergral longitudinally aligned tab, the transverse hole across which is the point of break as well as the original attachment point for the pin, which is now missing. The accumulated iron staining at this point suggests the pin was made from iron. The reverse side of the foot end of the brooch has the remnant of the integral catchplate. Similar brooches are shown in Hattatt, A Visual Catalogue of Ancient Brooches (2007) p.376 which are dated to circa 500-600 AD. Dimensions: length 46.9mm; width 21.1mm; thickness 2.4mm; weight 11.0g
