Anglo-saxon copper alloy cruciform brooch |
||
Description |
English: Early Anglo-Saxon copper-alloy cruciform brooch, 75mm long, 21mm wide and 20mm deep. The brooch is in good condition with a green patina and weighs 25g. The brooch is almost complete, except for the knobs and the pin. At the top is a rectangular head plate which is decorated with two incised lines running down each vertical edge. The reverse of the head plate has a single semi-circular pin bar lug with a small circular hole.
The bow is 20mm long, with a steeply curved surface and a triangular facet in each corner. Beyond this are flat panels to top and bottom of the bow. The foot starts with a flat panel 5mm long with two horizontal incised lines, and then has chamfered edges for about 5mm before merging into a semi-spherical collar. Below this is the animal head, which has a slight ridge running down its centre flanked by two rounded, protruding eyes. Below the eyes are incised chevrons (inverted V shapes) and 10mm below the eyes the brooch expands into the joined nostrils. The catchplate takes up the reverse from the edge of the bow to the eyes, c.20mm in length. Below the catchplate is a rib just a few millimetres high, which continues for another c. 5mm before merging into the surface. The brooch terminates with the remains of a narrow suspension loop which was originally pierced from side to side, probably to hold a 'spangle' or pendant. Brooches of this form are known in German as 'Klapperschmuck' (literally 'rattle-jewellery'). This example dates to the 5th or 6th centuries AD. |
