Title
Anglo- Saxon cruciform brooch from Kilham, East Riding Yorks
Description
English: Two joining fragments of a cast copper-alloy early Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch, broken across the lower part of the headplate. The top knob (7.2mm long by 8.3mm wide) is half-round and has a large transverse groove (2.2mm wide). There are no side knobs, nor any evidence of them having been present. The headplate is undecorated, with a flat central panel and 2 slightly lower, slightly flaring wings with rounded corners. The head is approx 19.6mm long and 47.6mm wide, and there is a projecting pin lug (7.9mm long) underneath although the pin is now missing.
The bow is 20.4mm wide at the top, narrowing to 18.8mm, and 31.5mm long. It has small flat panels with transverse grooves at the top and bottom. The main part of the bow is rounded with 2 facets.
The bottom of the foot has broken off, with 28.5mm in length remaining. There is a flat panel with 2 small transverse grooves about two-thirds of the way down it. To either side of this panel there is an elaborate lappet in the shape of a bird's head, 16.6mm long and projecting 6.5mm, with an eye shape at the top and a drilled perforation (2.3mm in diameter) below, around which the beak of the bird curves. Below the flat panel is a flattened half-round panel, with a large transverse groove (2.8mm wide) above a smaller groove (1.5mm wide). Immediately below this groove the rest of the foot has broken off. Underneath the flat panel of the foot is the remnant of the catchplate (15.5mm long).
