Title
Anglo-Scandinavian copper-alloy chape
Description
English: An incomplete, Anglo-Scandinavian cast copper-alloy fitting, probably a knife scabbard chape, dating to the late 10th or 11th century. The chape has an openwork abstract zoomorphic form representing a winged beast in profile. The beast is shown going left; its head is pointed oval and has features defined by grooves. The eye is a large pointed oval, while the ears are formed by two triangular peaks. The snout is tapered. The head is rounded at the side, and appears to have originally continued to form a matching plate on the other side. The neck is narrow and formed by three transverse ribs. The body is slender and has a large pointed oval wing, decorated with a series of grooves. Two legs extend beneath the beast; these are thick and squat, terminating with narrow paws with three claws. A rivet hole is located in the rear paw. The beast has a stub-like tail.

The object has a mid green surface with patches of brown patina in the grooves.

Other similar examples are recorded on the PAS database, such as WAW-03F886, BH-9C3582, DUR-7DA853 and SUSS-77F477. They are thought to be end protectectors for C11th (ish) knife scabbards.
