Title
Anglo-Saxon strap end with animal head terminal and silvered interlace panel
Description
English: Early Medieval strap end; Cast copper alloy Anglo-Saxon strap end with silvered interlace decoration and zoomorphic terminal. Probably of 8th or 9th century date. The strap end is sub-rectangular, tapering slightly at the split end and narrowing to a rounded point at the terminal end. The back plate has the remains of two circular rivet holes at the split end. The front plate is broken off at the point where the rivet holes would be. The terminal end has moulded decoration indicating an animal head with circular eyes and prominent brow. The panel behind the animal head has interlace decoration, possibly in the form of a beast with a gaping mouth. The interlace panel is picked out with the remains of silvering. The back is undecorated. Length 39.0mm, width (max) 10.4mm, thickness 2.5mm, weight 4.70g
