Title
Anglo-Saxon small-long brooch
Description
English: An incomplete Early-Medieval/Anglo-Saxon Small-Long brooch. Only the foot and catchplate survive, the remainder of the brooch now missing due to old breaks. The foot is rectangular in form and section with a flaring triangular terminal end that has a rounded bottom edge. At the top of the fragment is an incomplete rectangular panel with double transverse grooves, beneath which is a short faceted section. Separating this faceted section from the terminal is a moulded transverse band with transverse flute and double transverse grooves above and below. On the back face of the foot is an integrally cast catchplate that is rectangular in form with folded outer edge. This brooch measures 31.80mm in length, 15.54mm in width at terminal, 7.14mm in width at foot, 7.89mm in thickness at catchplate, and weighs 3.49g.

This is an Anglo-Saxon small-long brooch similar to examples in the Ashmolean Museum (for example: MacGregor and Bolick, 1993: nos. 15.13, 15.32-34). It dates to the 6th century, c.500-600 AD.
