Title |
Anglo-Saxon silver sceat |
||
Description |
English: An Anglo-Saxon silver sceat.
The sceat is devolved so it may well be imitative of a more substantial issue. The left-hand image is the reverse and has elements of Series F and Series D. Series F in the cross-on-steps (steps at the top in the image), Series D in the pellets in the angles (F has annulets in various positions around the cross). The garbled inscription could be either series. The obverse is probably a very devolved right-facing bust with an A behind the head and a garbled inscription, which is typical of Series D (copying Series C). The sceat is a probable imitation of Series D (type 2c), although note the vague similarities to Series F reverses. The date will most likely be c.700-10. |
