Title
Anglo-Saxon or Anglo-Scandinavian sword pommel
Description
English: A complete copper-alloy sword pommel of Early-Medieval date. It has a base that curves upwards towards the outer edges, with five curved lobes that increase in size towards the centre. The central lobe has an oval shaped aperture, with slight notch to one side, through which would have originally passed the tang of the sword. This aperture expands towards the base of the object where it is oval shaped in form. The outer lobes are mostly solid and have flat undersides. There are no rivets on the pommel, which suggests it was held in place simply by the hammered tang. The entire object has a dark green patina with some surface damage and pale green corrosive copper-alloy products in places. It measures 53.84mm in width/length, 26.77mm in height, 15.73mm in thickness, and weighs 46.13g.

This is a sword pommel of late Early-Medieval date and of probable Anglo-Saxon/Anglo-Scandinavian origin. The current example appears to belong to Petersen's (1919) L type VI pommels, a fusion of Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Scandinavian fashions, it dates from the 10th or 11th century. Similar pommels have been found at Ely, Cambs, and Tostock, Suffolk.
