Title |
Anglo-Saxon glass bead or whorl |
||
Description |
English: Approximately one third of an Anglo-Saxon glass bead or spindle whorl, probably used as an amulet.
The object was originaly circular in plan and plano-convex in cross-section. It has a circular hole through the centre measuring 7mm diameter. The object is made from opaque, blue/black glass and is decorated with a superficial layer of opaque, white glass combed into an arcaded design in eight fields (probably therefore 16 in total when complete). The curved outer edge of the base is decorated with thicker waves of white glass. Overall, the decoration resembles a shell but it is unclear if this is intentional or not. An almost identical example was found in Marchelepot, Somme in 1888 and is now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (A. MacGregor (1997), 'A Summary Catalogue of the Continental Archaeological Collections: Roman Iron Age, Migration Period, Early Medieval', BAR International Series 674, p. 188, no. 81.1). The Somme example is discussed alongside two other large examples: 'all have the appearance of spindle-whorls, but current opinion suggests that they may have been amuletic (see Werner 1956, pp. 36-7). There is some suggestion that some may have been worn as garter ornaments. Alternatively, they could have been worn strung on chatelaines...'. The discussion suggests that necklaces increased in size and length up to the early seventh century. |
