Description |
English: A copper alloy Early Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch. it is complete except for its pin. The head has a full-round top knob sitting on a waisted stem attached to the head-plate which is rectangular. There are two narrow wings attached to either side of the central panel. The headplate measures 8.37mm in length and 10.97mm in width. The bow is semi-circular in profile, and widens at its centre to 11.72mm. It tapers to the start of the foot and has a band of transverse moulding (three bands and two grooves) at its base and before the foot begins. The top of the foot is 6.5mm in width with a further band of transverse moulding, before it starts to taper towards its base where it measures 4.4mm in width. There is an elongated horse-head terminal defined by two transverse bands above the raised ridge of the eyebrows. A longitudinal raised ridge down the centre marks the horse's nose, and there is a spatulate terminal for its nostrils. On the reverse are the remains of the catchplate. The brooch measures 66.62mm in length and weighs 9.78g. |
