Anglo-Saxon copper alloy small long brooch |
||
Description |
English: An Anglo-Saxon copper alloy small long brooch dating to the sixth century AD. The brooch has a rectangular headplate with an angle cut out from each corner. The perimeter is notched and a row of punched pellet-in crescents borders in the interior of the perimeter. The headplate has four circular holes, one in each angle. The bow is short, faceted and decorated with a grooved rib down the centre with outward-facing chevrons to either side. The panel below the bow is flat and decoratedwith three shallow transverse grooves. The lower part of the panel is D-shaped in cross-section and decorated with three sets of three-grooves. The foot is triangular and decorated with a perimeter of punched inward-facing chevrons. The lower edge of the foot is decorated with three bands of grooves. Two lugs project from the reverse of the headplate and iron corrosion is seen around this. A catchplate survives on the reverse of the panel below the bow. The pin is missing. |
