Title
Anglo-Saxon copper alloy great square headed brooch
Description
English: Fragment of an Anglo-Saxon copper alloy Great Square Headed brooch, of Hines Group XVII. The fragment comprises the bow and the top half of the footplate. The bow is rectangular in section and arched in profile. The footplate is broadly crescentric and broken at either side. The footplate narrows at the middle towards the botoom; the foot is missing. The footplate is decorated with two inward swirling bird heads, both with a hooked beak. The grooves are deeply made, and gilding survives in places. Below the animal heads is an uncertain motif. A small catchplate is located in the centre of the reverse.

The motif on the footplate resembles many others belonging to Group XVII, which together have a distribution in Lincolnshire, Norfolk, and Suffolk (Hines 1997, fig. 66).
