Title
Anglo-Saxon copper alloy great square headed brooch
Description
English: Fragment of an Anglo-Saxon florid cruciform brooch. Only the central portion of the brooch remains. At the top of the surviving fragment is the lower part of the bow. The bow is arched and has a flat rectangular panel containing part of a chip-carved motif. At the base of the bow is a large flat retangular panel. This contains an inner rectangular frame in which is a chip-carved motif. To the left and right of the panel is a fragmentary lappett. The most complete one, on the left, reveals what appears to be the curved eye-brows of a mask. A fragment of copper-alloy extends from the bottom of the panel. This contains two eyes formed by a a pellet set on a recessed oval background. The base of this fragment appears to be decorated with the upper part of a scroll-shaped nostril. On the reverse is a moulded catchplate running from the base of the bow to the break. The front of the brooch has been gilded.

The brooch is similar to examples from Holdenby, Kempston and Haslingfield, all of Hines's Group XXI (Hines, 1997, pl. 79-80).
