Title
Anglo-Saxon copper alloy cruciform brooch
Description
English: Copper alloy cruciform brooch. The brooch has a rectangular headplate formed out of one square panel with a rectangular panel to either side. Above is a faceted fully rounded and collared integral knop. The bow is faceted, wide and arched with a central v-shaped groove running vertically down its length. There is another faceted rectagular panel below the bow which leads onto a zoomorphic foot. The eyes are defined by a pair of crescent shaped incised lines on either side. The snout of the beasts head is shovel-shaped, the perimeter and main central ridge of which is decorated with a line of punched chevrons. There is iron corrosion surrounding the pin lug on the reverse of the headplate. The catchplate is complete and the outer face of the curl of the catchplate is decorated with three vertical lines of repeated hash marks. The flat back panel to either side of the catchplate is also decorated with a line of punched triangles on one side, and zig-zags on the other. This zig-zagging decoration extends around the perimeter of the reverse of the snout. Two further lines of opposing chevrons run from the lowest point of the catchplate to the tip of the snout on the reverse.
