Title |
Anglo-Saxon copper alloy cruciform brooch |
||
Description |
English: Fragment of a copper alloy early Saxon cruciform brooch, most likely Martin type 1. The fragment comprises a small section of the bow, the catch-plate and the zoomorphic finial. The catch blate (located at the base of the bow) is rectangular and extends perpendicularly, with a looped return at the end in which the pin would have been held. The end of the bow and the start of the catch-plate are each decorated with two paralell grooves extending across. The plate is mainly flat, however the lower half consists of a central flat segment flanked by downward sloping facets. The start of the animal head is marked by a centrally grooved collar. The head has bulbous eyes, a long triangular-section snout-like feature (decorated with a geometric design in which two lines form triangular shapes on each facet, with the widest points in the centre to form a diamond shape) and round, flared nostrils. |
