Title |
Anglo-Saxon copper-alloy S-shaped brooch |
||
Description |
English: Fragment of an early Anglo-Saxon S-shaped brooch. The brooch is made of copper-alloy and dates to the sixth century. The fragment comprises the curved terminal of the brooch. The fragment is flat and curves back onto itself, creating a kidney-shaped opening. The curve is in the form of an animal-head, mostly probably a bird. At the top of the head is a rearward pointing crest. The beak is downward curved and the upper and lower parts are defined by a slender incised line. A ringed dot motif represents the eye. The back of the neck is decorated with punched circles, and these continue along the straight back until the break. A catchplate is located on the reverse.
Similar S-shaped brooches have been found in Lincolnshire at Keelby (LIN-BFDEB3 and LIN-E106D6). |
