Title
Anglo-Saxon brooch of ansate form
Description
English: An incomplete copper-alloy ansate brooch of Early-Medieval/Anglo-Saxon date. One terminal end and the base of the bow survive, the remainder now missing due to old breaks. The bow is rectangular in form, D-shaped in section with flat back and rounded front face. It curves downwards to the surviving terminal, which is flat and circular in form. The terminal is decorated on its front face with four short grooves that form a border, within which are a further four grooves arranged in a cross-shaped motif. On the back face of the terminal is an integrally cast catchplate. This is rectangular in form and curved in profile. The entire object measures 15.54mm in length, 13.04mm in width at terminal, 4.23mm in width at bow, 2.16mm in thickness at bow, and 1.76g in weight.

This is an incomplete Anglo-Saxon brooch of ansate form. It finds parallels in other examples published from Suffolk (West, 1998: 98.4; SF10288) and is of Middle Anglo-Saxon date, c.720-850 AD.
