Title
Anglo-Saxon brooch
Description
English: An incomplete copper-alloy early Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch the foot and one side knop are now missing due to an old break. It measures 48mm in surviving length and 32mm in width.

The head plate is small and the central panel narrow. The side wings are rectangular and there is an integral knop projecting from the central upper edge of the central panel and from the central edge of one side wing. The other knop and part of the side is missing. The two surviving knops are rounded on their front faces and flat on the reverse. On the reverse of the headplate there is an integral pin loop with the remains of a corroded iron pin within it.

There are transverse decorative grooves where the central panel meets the bow. The bow has a central ridge and measures 22mm in length and 10mm in width. Below the bow is the flat panel which has two parallel transverse grooves across its upper edge.

This cruciform brooch is very similar to another incomplete example from Freckenham, see SF-8874, and is 6th century in date.
