Title |
Anglo-Saxon ansate brooch |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper-alloy Anglo-Saxon ansate brooch that is missing its catchplate due to old breaks. The brooch has two flattened circular terminals with incised circular borders that contain cross-shaped motifs. These are connected by a short curved bow that is D-shaped in section with a flat back and high, rounded front face. The back face of one of the terminals has an integrally cast lug that is rectangular in form with a single circular perforation that has traces of an iron pin still attached to it. The opposite lug has lost its ctachplate, but there is a small circular area with an added white metal that probably represents solder to attach the catchplate to the brooch. The brooch is relatively worn, with a dark green/brown patina and traces of corrosive copper-alloy products. It measures 35.50mm in length, 10.16mm in width, and weighs 4.43g. This ansate brooch is of Middle Anglo-Saxon date with close parallels noted from Ipswich (West, 1998: nos. 98.3-4). This indicates a date in the 8th-9th centuries AD for the current example. |
