Title
Anglo-Saxon Strap End Thomas Class A Type 1
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy Anglo-Saxon strap end of Thomas Class A Type 1. It is missing most of the attchment end due to old breaks. It is sub-oval in shape with convex sides, tapering to a decorative zoomorphic terminal. The terminal has a flattened snout with transverse ridge that has incised triangular grooves. Above the snout the front face of the terminal has a border containing incised triangles and stylised eyes, followed by rounded ears with crescent shaped decoration and incised triangles. The sides of the plate have longitudinal borders with incised pelleted decoration. Within the borders is a central decorative panel that mirrors the shape of the strap end and contains a chip carved entwined decoration, perhaps zoomorphic in form, in Trewhiddle style with a niello background. At the top of the strap end is an incomplete split attachment end that is missing its front face, as well as the top of the back face, due to old breaks. The back face of the starp end is flat and undecorated. The entire object measures 30.49mm in length, 11.41mm in width, 2.30mm in thickness, and weighs 2.71g.

This strap end falls into Thomas' Class A Saxon strap ends and is further defined as a Type 1 strap end due to the presence of the split attachment end, the shape of the plate, the zoomorphic terminal and the central decorative panel in Trewhiddle style and with inlaid niello (see Thomas, 2003: pp. 2, fig. 1.1). This indicates a date in the 9th century AD for the current example.
