Title
Anglo-Saxon Cruciform Brooch
Description
English: An incomplete and worn Early-Medieval/Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch. It is missing the lower half of the brooch, side knops and the pin due to old breaks. The headplate is flat, rectangular in form and with traces of decoration on the front face. This comprises the remains of double parallel grooves to either side, the remainder of the decorative elements now obscured by encrustation that is perhaps resultant from exposure to high temperatures. At the top of the headplate is a central integrally cast knop, which is fully round with faceted globular top, narrow neck and raised collar with central transverse circumferential groove. On the back face of the headplate is an integrally cast semi-circular lug with traces of a corroded iron pin. The top of the bow survives intact and is D-shaped in section with concave back face and rounded front face. At the top of the bow is a small raised rectangular panel with semi-circular notches to the sides and transverse double grooves at its base. The front face of the bow beneath this has a central vertical groove. This brooch measures 45.96mm in length (including knop; 35.19mm excluding knop), 25.55mm in width at headplate, 13.93mm in width at bow, 3.80mm in thickness at bow, and weighs 17.96g.

This is an Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch similar to examples from Suffolk (e.g. West, 1998: nos 133.13). It dates to the 5th century, c.410-500 AD.
