Title |
Anglo-Saxon Cruciform Brooch |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy cruciform brooch of Anglo-Saxon/Early-Medieval date. The upper half of the brooch and bow, pin and lower half of the foot are all missing due to old breaks. The surviving section of the bow is oval shaped in cross-section with a rounded, and slightly faceted, front face. It terminates at its base with a rectangular panel. The foot below this is flat, rectangular in form and tapers towards the remains of a horse head terminal. This comprises two transverse bands beneath which can be seen the remains of two globular eyes before the foot terminates in old breaks. On the back face of the foot is an integrally cast rectangular catchplate. This very worn brooch measures 29.39mm in length, 8.65mm in width at bow, 2.87mm in thickness at bow, and weighs 4.03g.
The horse head foot on this example indicates that it is an incomplete Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch and of probable 5th-6th century AD date similar to numerous examples published from Suffolk (West, 1998). |
