Title |
Anglo-Saxon Buckle |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper-alloy buckle frame of probable Anglo-Saxon date. It has a D-shaped frame with thickened outer edge that is oval shaped in section, and narrowed bar that shows signs of use-wear. Around the centre of the bar hinges the remains of a separately cast and now incomplete copper-alloy pin that is flat, rectangular in form and missing most of the shaft and point of the pin due to old breaks. The entire object has a green patina and measures 15.81mm in width, 12.23mm in length, 2.26mm in thickness, and weighs 1.05g.
This is a buckle frame of Anglo-Saxon date similar to examples recorded from Suffolk (West, 1998: nos. 4.27, 20.32, 30.33, 20.37, 68.8). This buckle is similar in form to Marzinzik's Type I.10d-ii buckle frames (Marzinzik, 2003: pp. 31) and dates to the Early-Medieval period, c. 400-720 AD. |
