Title |
Anglo-Saxon Buckle |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper-alloy buckle of possible Early-Medieval date. It has an oval shaped frame that is circular in section and retains a separately cast copper-alloy plate. The plate is rectangular in form, cast from a single piece of copper-alloy that is folded around the frame to form an upper and lower plate of equal size. It has rectangular frame recesses and pin slot, with a single central rivet hole at the attachment end that retains a separately cast copper-alloy rivet with flattened head. A separately cast copper-alloy pin hinges around the bar, is oval shaped in section, rectangular in form and tapers to a rounded tip that extends beyond the outer edge of the frame where it curves downwards. The entire object is worn, with some areas of corrosion and encrustation, as well as iron staining on the lower plate. It measures 17.94mm in width, 30.99mm in legth, 4.20mm in thickness, and weighs 5.73g.
This is a copper-allot buckle of possible Early-Medieval/Anglo-Saxon date. It finds parallels in examples from Suffolk (e.g. West, 1998: nos. 13.7, 20.21-22) and is of possible Early Anglo-Saxon date, c.410-720 AD. |
