Title |
Anglo-Saxon Brooch Knob |
||
Description |
English: A complete cast copper alloy detachable brooch knob from an Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch. The knob is sub-oval shaped in plan and semi-circular in section, with flattened back and ends. The terminal end is semi-circular in section and tapers slightly towards the flattened exterior end and has two small incised transverse grooves at the opposite end. Beneath the incised grooves the knob has a deep waist before expanding again to the semi-circular attachment end. The attachment end has two parallel incised transverse grooves and on the flat underside has a sub-rectangular slot. The entire knob has a central circular perforation that contains the remains of an iron bar that would have enabled attachment to the brooch. It measures 18.43mm in length, 10.87mm in width, 8.55mm in thickness, and weighs 6.42g. This is a brooch knob probably from the side of the brooch head and dating to the Anglo-Saxon period of the 5th-6th centuries AD. |
