Description
English: Joseph Lafayette Matthews was the most prominent citizen in Bland, Florida when he built a large two story home which still exists. He and his business partner, Thomas A. Doke, purchased 720 acres of land which was part of the Samuel Pyles plantation and operated a general merchandise store, four gin mills, a grist mill and Matthews was its Postmaster 1903-July 1906. Murdered at home on Dec. 1 1934 he is buried at Fort Call Cemetery. This photo of his gravesite is an original submitted by the user.
