While Allerdale officers worked selflessly during the emergency, their headquarters was within a few inches of flooding at high tide on Friday 20th November, 2009. Allerdale House and the substantial municipal car park are situated on specially raised ground of the Cloffocks that traditionally flooded in heavy weather. Allerdale House, built in 1994, sits across the natural flood plain. A large culvert between the headquarters and Borough Park (Home of Workington Reds football team) was expected to carry water away Flooded on the Cloffocks: i) The new £5 million pound police station which was built just 200 yards away for Allerdale HQ. ii) The proposed site for the new Tesco Extra Store. iii) New homes in the Old Brewery behind the cricket ground |
