Description
English: Oil painting on canvas, The Madonna with Saint John and Angels ('Madonna Corsini'), after Andrea del Sarto (Florence 1486 - Florence 1530), 16th century. A copy after the lost original Corsini Madonna of which there is a good version in the collection of Lord Egremont at Petworth House, West Sussex. The artist's name is inscribed on the cartellino on the ground on the right and the Christ Child holds St John the Baptist's scroll which is inscribed: [ECCE] AGNU[S DEI]. The Madonna, dressed in a pale greenish-blue shift over a bright yellow blouse and a darker bluish-green skirt, is seated on the ground with the Child on her lap in the manner of a Madonna of Humility. On the left, the Infant St John reaches for his scroll, held by the Christ Child whilst still looking over his left shoulder. Three angel children are behind the Madonna, the one on the left holds back an olive green curtain and the one in front, on the right, holds the neck of a lute.
