Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Andesite breccia from the Tertiary of Colorado, USA.

Andesite is an intermediate igneous rock, the extrusive equivalent of diorite. Its texture ranges from porphyritic to aphanitic to vesicular to brecciated (as in this sample). The rock comes from southwestern Colorado's extensive San Juan Volcanic Field, a complex area with multiple, Tertiary-aged volcanic centers and numerous volcanic rock units. Economically significant, precious metal-mineralized veins and replacement deposits are present that have long been targets for mining. Pictures of vintage San Juan gold ores can be seen in this photo album: www.flickr.com/photos/jsjgeology/albums/72157692701572272.
