Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Andalusite-bearing Rock. The white spots - sometimes likened to slugs - on this rock outcrop are andalusite, one of a group of three aluminium silicate minerals which are of great interest to geologists, because they reveal the temperatures and pressures under which the rocks have been metamorphosed, and hence how deep in the crust of the Earth they were buried during metamorphosis. Very roughly, andalusite forms from muddy sediments at pressures below 4 kbar and temperatures between 300ºC and 700ºC, and alters to kyanite at higher pressures or sillimanite at higher temperatures. This rock has been buried by anything between 3 and 12 km of later deposits, metamorphosed and then uplifted back to outcrop on the surface of the Earth. 1298672 is a close-up of some andalusite crystals.
