lthough they appear tohave a sexual design, yet I doubt whether the similarity isnot accidental. After a close examination of the platesgiven by Cabrera, I am inclined to think that nothing of theling-yoni element prevailed in the mind of the ancientAmerican sculptors. All the males are carefully draped inappropriate girdles, although in some a grotesque or otherornament, such as a human or bestial head, a flower, etc., isattached to the apron or fall of the girdle, resembling thesporran of the Highlander and the codpiece of mediaBvalknights and others. I may, however, mention some veryremarkable sculptures copied; one is a tree, whose trunk issurrounded by a serpent, and whose fruit is shaped likethe vesica piscis; in another is seen a youth whollyunclothed, save by a cap and gaiters, who kneels before asimilar tree, being ihreater.ed before and behind by somefierce animal. This figure is peculiar, differing from all therest in having an European rather than an American head PLATE X.
