Text Appearing Before Image:
Virgin, or the Queen of Heaven, associated with thefother, or the king. As these have been derivedfrom ancient Babylonian sources (Lajard, sur le Ciiltede Venus), we see that modern ideas of the RomanChurch are in consonance with very ancient ones.In one of the Figures, 16, it is clear that the Virginis identified with the moon, and her spouse with the 260 sun. Just so we see the Virgin associated both withthe sun and moon amongst modern Eomanists, asin Figure 17. Figure 17. /
Text Appearing After Image:
In Plate iii., Vol. i., she is surrounded withsuch symbols as the grape, the wheat-ear, the figand the pomegranate, precisely in the same manneras was Venus, Isis, Ehea, Ceres, or any othergoddess of ancient Greece, Rome and Asia. If there were any other evidence required to provethe identity of the modern virgin and child with theIshtar of Babylon, the Ri of Assyria, the Isis ofEgypt, the Sara of Hindostan, the Ceres of Greece, and the Venus of Cyprus, we should find it in thestyle of ornaments which crowd the Romish churches
