Thomas à Becket, archevêque de Canter-bui-y, né en 111.9, occupant le poste degrand chancelier de Heniy 11, eut avec ceprince des différends au sujet des préroga-tives du clergé, et fut exilé. Rappelé bien-tôt après en Angleten-e, il vit se renouvelerses démêlés avec le roi, et fut assassinépar plusieurs gentilshommes qui croyaientse rendre agréables à Heniy 11, mais quifurent ensuite désavoués (1170). Thomasà Becket fut canonisé par Alexandre ni. Lartiste a représenté la scène de lassas-sinat au moment où les meurtriers, larmeau poing, se jettent sur larchevêque sansdéfense.
