Conterminouswith the mortised beams, which were scarcely a foot underthe surface, there was a rude and much decayed platform ofrough planks and saplings resting on transverse beams of disco\t:tiy of a crannog at lochlee, 73 split oak-trees. One of these transverse beams wliicli Imeasured was 14; feet long and 8 inches broad, and fora few inches at each extremity was not split, so that theportion thus left acted as a catch (for the planks above it),like the flange on the wheel of a railway wagon. Diggingunderneath this platform, we passed through a compact massof clay, stones, beams of soft wood, and ultimately brush-wood, underneath which, being on a level with the drain, wecould not farther explore, owing to the oozing up of water.
