Summary
[edit]DescriptionAncient Roman fresco of Hermes with two flying female figures.jpg |
English: Restored fragmentary ancient Roman fresco depicting the god Hermes and two flying female figures. Both women are stripped to the waist, with their veils billowing behind them. The image of the billowing veil is an artistic shorthand - known as velificatio, it denotes godhood. Both women must, therefore, be divine. Even though one of them carries a lyre, they are probably not Muses, given their nudity.
