Title
coffin fragment
Description

A roughly triangular fragment of a coffin casing comprising of wood and plaster. It is decorated with gesso work, winged goddess in green, black & brown. The image appears to be a winged Goddess.

Following gas chromatography, mass spectromety & ultra-violet spectroscopy tests, important details about the decoration's paint was ascertained. The green pigment for the paint was made from plant-dervied organic pigment rather than the mineral green malachite or frit that was usually used on coffins. The organic pigment was further anaylsed revealing the organic matter to be plant chlorophyll. It has been argued that the pigment, as used to decorate the coffin, was chosen especially due to its vividness. It may be evidence that the makers of the coffin believed the pigment may promote regeneration in the afterlife and that they held beliefs that organic compounds were symbolic of new life.

It is thought the coffin dates from around 1000BC.Originally owned by JR Odgen of Harrogate
